Wondering
what a typical day is like for an AVSAR Volunteer? Read on for more details.
A typical day: The schedule outlined
gives a brief idea about the time each volunteer has to invest on a daily
basis. The timeframe may vary depending
on the work/project or other requirements.
9:00 Volunteer
leaves for work
10:00 Volunteer
arrives at the work place
10:00-
6:00 Works with the partner-NGO
(Project to be finalized by your NGO only after you meet up and discuss with
them).
6:00 Volunteer
heads back to the home- base or AVSAR’s office
7:00
-8:00 Discussion
session at AVSAR’s office or Hindi tutoring at home-
base
Orientation: Volunteers are required to report at the specified time
and date. This date is not flexible owing to pre-made arrangements with partner
NGO’s.
Discussion sessions: Each volunteer is required to read the readings outlined by AVSAR staff for that
specific day. All required readings are given to the volunteer on the day of
the orientation with the month’s schedule.
Hindi tutoring: Hindi tutoring is mandatory for non-Hindi
speakers. Sessions are also open to volunteers who need to sharpen their Hindi
skills.
Peer topics and
presentations: Each volunteer is required to present a topic of his/her
interest to peers and AVSAR staff. Examples of peer topics include vitamin
deficiencies, Tata monopoly, HIV
status of sex workers, Lice, Riots in Mumbai, Hinduism and others.
Mid-term interviews: AVSAR conducts interviews to gauge the volunteer’s
experience at the mid-point of their experience.
Personal days: Volunteers can take a break and may choose to stay
outside the home-base. They can leave on Saturday and must be back at the home-base on Sunday evening. Long term
volunteers (for more than a month) can accumulate the personal days and take it
together at an appropriate time. This needs to be consulted with AVSAR staff
and your NGO.
NGO presentation: Each volunteer is required to find a local NGO (other than the one you are currently
working with) in his/her field of interest. This helps the volunteer to learn
more about the on-going work in the field of interest and also helps in
expanding AVSAR’s network.
Newsletter article: Each volunteer is required to write a piece for AVSAR’s newsletter. You may choose to submit it while in
Exit interviews: AVSAR conducts exit interviews to gauge the
volunteer’s entire experience before they leave.
Check out: All volunteers are required to check out on the date specified. Extensions will not be
granted unless in case of emergency. Please book your flight tickets
accordingly.
**Please note that this is just an example of a
typical day- depending on your project and NGO’s specific needs it is subject
to change. Please contact info@goyalmd.com
